We made it to our hotel last night a little late. We got in, unpacked, gave Liam a bath and then we all went to sleep. Liam and I have been sick for a while and Meagan had worked the whole day, so we were all pretty beat.
This morning Meagan had to be at her volunteer station for Heart to Heart by 8. So, we all left a little early to see if we could drive through and see any of the areas affected by the huge tornado that recently hit here.
We were getting close to her volunteer trailer and still everything looked normal, then all of the sudden it's complete devastation for as far as you can see. It's amazing how a storm so powerful can affect two buildings so close to each other so differently.
I've seen the effects of the 2004 fires in San Diego and have helped rebuild homes there. I've been to the 9th Ward in New Orleans after Katrina came through. I don't mean to diminish either of those events or the suffering caused by those deadly forces of nature by saying this, but this is the worst natural disaster I've witnessed. Practically EVERYTHING that was in the path of this huge tornado is leveled. If it is standing, I don't imagine it will be that way for long. Everything is going to need to be rebuilt. It's just absolutely crazy.
So, these are a few images I snapped with my phone to try and convey the damages done to this small (what looked to be) an apartment complex. I didn't want to stray too far from the cleared path through the parking lot, for fear I'd step on a nail or some other sharp object amongst all of the debris. Plus, Liam was in the car so I was never further than 15 feet from it. I would like to have a day to just go around and document this all with my real camera, but I don't think that's going to happen with the time we have here.
Interesting note: Meagan just wrote me as I'm finishing this up and said "you wouldn't believe how much dust is in the air. I took a baby wipe and wiped my arm and it was covered in dirt."
Take care everyone,
