Android 365: Day Ninety-Eight

We setup our pool today, which meant it was a prime opportunity to retry underwater photos. My first attempt was in the colder weather, so I filled up our bath tub and used artificial lighting. The results were less than satisfactory, mainly due to the low light and high graininess. This time though I had the sun... and if you haven't looked lately, it's pretty bright.

So I bagged up my Droid X. I put on the second layer of defense first, a small sandwich sized ziploc bag. I used a straw to suck out as much air as possible prior to sealing the bag. This way I would have air pockets creating a curved bubble to shoot through while under water. The first layer of defense was a gallon sized ziploc, which was put on the same way as the first. Even though these are thin layers of plastic, the phone was still not able to focus well through it. Oh well, I've already prepared it, might as well see what I can get anyways.

The clear photos were not taken with the bags on.

Almost forgot! This underwater attempt almost ended in disaster for my phone. I had it underwater (about 18 inches) just clicking away. All of the sudden the remaining are in the outer bag began to escape and form a stream of air bubbles. If air buubles are going out, most likely there's water getting in! So I pulled it out quickly and removed the bags carefully not to get the phone wet. Water had leaked into the primary enclosure, thank goodness for the sandwich bag!

Stop Action. Or is it?

Android 365: Day Ninety-Seven

I had a really simple lighting setup put together today to try and get some commercial style photos that had a really good look. I have a glass desk and I put two table lamps underneath it and then taped a piece of paper to the bottom side of the desk to diffuse the light. It was intended for use with my DSLR, but I figured I'd try to see what I could get with my Droid and a flashlight. The flashlight was to provide the fill light, whereas with the DLSR I used a strobe attached to the camera. The results I got with the Droid aren't too bad, I'm actually pretty impressed considering the lighting in the area was pretty dark. I've included one of the photos I took with my DSLR to show the look I was going for. The light beneath the desk was to illuminate the liquid inside the bottle and make it stand out subtly without blasting a light through the bottom of it like I've tried in the past. The result this time is much better I think.

Android 365: Day Ninety-Six

One cool thing about the really small lens on the Droid X or any camera phone, is that they can fit into really small places that a normal SLR lens couldn't. This allows me to get some things that I normally wouldn't be able to shoot with my D700.
